Ugong-Agong (Philippines)
UGONG-AGONG, a four-person ensemble hailing from Manila, Philippines, affiliated with @Santa Isabel College, specializes in the drum, gong and bamboo music of The Philippines, as well as the dances and chants associated with these traditions.
The group’s four members—Anna Paula Arga, Rolinda Gilbaliga, Alex Olaguera and Jonalyn Sebastian (all are females)—specialize in performing on the kulintang, the bossed-gong instrument played in various parts of Mindanao.
The group also performs music from the other two key regions of The Philippines known for its indigenous peoples: mountainous Luzon and varied islands of The Visayas.
The members also play flutes, bamboo pipes and jaw’s harps. They round out their performances with chants and dances associated with The Philippines’ indigenous peoples.
